Maureen HawkridgeI studied at Brighton Art College, Leeds College of Art, and the University of Bristol to obtain a BA in Fine Art and a PGCE teaching qualification. My favoured style at the time was Pop Art, and I made mixed-media constructions using fibreglass, cloth, wood and metal. I was later drawn towards painting by my studies with the Open University, particularly the course on Modern Art and Modernism, and by the many and varied exhibitions of the work of modern masters which I have visited over the years. However I have not attempted to acquire a “style”, as I believe that I should paint “just as it comes”. I tend to choose subject matter with strong underlying abstract forms, using these to structure my picture. However my paintings are also about my emotional reaction to what I am seeing, and I try to capture that essence so that I can experience it again later. I also hope to communicate something of this to the beholder, if not the sensation of being there, then at least a sense of atmosphere and a pleasing balance of form and colour. |
